Operations

TC&W, MPLI and SMRR operate roughly 340-miles of track between St. Paul, Minnesota and Sisseton, South Dakota. Trains normally operate six days per week (Mon-Sat) between St. Paul and Ruebel, MN and 5 days a week between Montevideo and Milbank. Trains operate seven days a week during peak demand. Please be aware that on duty times are a rough guideline and the times often change, sometimes by a lot.
With the exception of the West End Switch, each non-unit train is operated as "turn," meaning it goes out to a certain location, turns around and returns to where it originated from while performing work along the way. Every Turn hands cars off to the next train until all the cars have arrived at their destination. During recent years TC&W has begun running a number of unit trains, all of which use foreign power. All unit trains also run to/from the Twin Cities for interchange with BNSF, CP and UP. The one exception is the Unit Coal Empty which is interchanged to BNSF at Appleton.
